Why Micronesia?

Welcome to Micronesia, a spellbinding world abounding with warm caressing breezes, captivatingly rich culture and exotic adventure all dancing around in unison under the thick golden rays of an arching tropical sun. Together with Guam, Micronesia comprises of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia and Palau, with each different island chain offering a unique and unforgettable experience.

ISLANDS OF MICRONESIA

Guam, a U.S. territory, is the largest and most populous island, considered the “gateway” to Micronesia and a hub for the region.


The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) is a U.S. Commonwealth consisting of 14 islands just to the north of Guam, and along with Guam, forms the Mariana Islands archipelago.


The Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) and Palau are both independent island nations in a Compact of Free Association with the U.S. and together make up the nations in Caroline Islands archipelago to the south of Guam.


The Republic of the Marshall Islands is also an independent island in a Compact of Free Association with the U.S. approximately 1500 miles to the east of Guam, and is comprised of many small low lying islands and atolls.

For those of us who seek out locations where dreams long for reality, there are still a few left in the world where unspoiled landscapes, epic adventures and the romance of a secluded lagoon and forgotten beach can become reality.  Beneath expansive azure skies and seemingly infinite stretches of both turquoise and deep blue water ahead, the region of Micronesia is still one of those places.

As modern technology and communication connect the world at an ever greater pace and the once exotic places of yesterday become increasingly rare today, it is refreshing to find hidden jewels still available for exploration, admiration, and yes, even relaxation.

Mobil All Micronesia Fishing Tournament

Labor Day weekend in North America is the same weekend the Marshall Islands pays tribute to its working class during Rijerbal Day, held on the first Friday of September. This Marshalls Billfish Club-sponsored fishing tournament is one of the most exciting national holidays. Teams from across Asia and the South Pacific fight to catch the biggest bite at the Uliga Dock on Saturday and Sunday, and receive awards at the Marshall Islands Resort Poolside on Sunday.

Manit (Custom) Day

The most important aspect of Marshall Islands culture, family, is the focus of this cultural festival held the last Friday of September. Anyone on the islands can set up booths and sell food or handicrafts outside the Alele Museum. Basket weaving and coconut husking are among the most popular contests. Local school children perform traditional dances, skits, songs, and stories. The day coincides with the week-long LutokKobbanAlele festival created to preserve and promote Marshallese culture.

Gospel Day

On the first Friday of December, the population of the Marshall Islands celebrates this national holiday in honor of the American missionaries who brought Christianity to the isolated islands. Like Thanksgiving in North America, family and food are a main focus, but church services play an even more important role in Gospel Day.

Fisherman’s Day

Friday July 6 is Fisherman’s Day in the Marshall Islands. The Marshalls Billfish Club hosts a two-day tournament, which marks the end of their fishing ‘year’. vessels depart in the morning and return in the early evening to have their catches weighed and measured. Anglers receive prizes for the heaviest fish, biggest fish, largest number caught, and many more.

TRENCH CHALLENGE

Join us in Guam's Biggest Obstacle Course Race and only qualifier to the OCR World Championships in the Asia Pacific region featuring world famous Starting line emcee and motivational speaker Coach Pain. This 4 to 7-mile run which takes place on the Guam International Raceway's 250-acre property welcomes all participants whether you are a top athlete or average joe.

MAY PUBLIC PROGRAMS AT WAR IN THE PACIFIC NATIONAL

May 2, Thursday: 5 pm at the Visitor Center: Coin Forum

Join us at the T. Stell Newman Visitor Center, Sumay (located near the US Navy main gate) for a coin forum hosted by the United States Mint. The coin forum is an opportunity for the public to learn about the quarter being launched to honor War in the Pacific National Historical Park, upcoming United States coin programs and initiatives and express their views about future coin programs.

KING’S GUAM FUTURES TENNIS TOURNAMENT

The Guam Futures is an annual International Tennis Federation (ITF) Pro Circuit tournament, realized with tremendous support from the Japan Tennis Association. The summer tournament attracts touring professional tennis players worldwide to Guam to compete for coveted world-ranking points. 
The majority of professional players come from Japan and other East Asian countries, as well as Australia and the United States. The tournament’s main draw features both singles and doubles play, with a qualifying round held prior to the start of main draw events.
